Urbanization has turned our culture's view of the dark into a phobia. We tend to walk quickly at night because being out in the darkness is something we instinctively avoid. Nighttime exploration and adventure is also less appealing because, not only due to fear but our habits as a society that increasingly requires technology. These factors conspire to confine us within well-lit homes. As a result, our culture denies us the pleasure of involvement with natural cycles of darkness. Nighttime settings offer tableaux, which spark the unconscious human desire for deeper connections unavailable by the light of day.
