Toy Camera, 1981-1992

These images were made with one plastic toy camera, with the brand name, Banner. I used it starting in the early 1980’s. This particular one attracted me for its quirky light leaks. I also like the little knobby shape on the top of the hand-hewed looking frame.  The plastic lens distorts slightly and produces a peculiar soft focus, making the images less definitive than “real” cameras.

The combination of intuitive decisions of subject matter plus the serendipitous nature of the camera often combine to create more than one can consciously control.

For me it adds a physical and emotional dimension that supports my intention for the images to evoke faint recollections of dream fragments, unwritten poems, and memories… either actual or fictitious.
